SpayMart - A non profit organization

Homeless animal overpopulation
is a crisis.

In our state the number one cause of death among companion animals is euthanasia.

History & Nature of SpayMart

SpayMart has been chartered in the city of New Orleans since 1998 with the single mission of reducing euthanasia rates by providing the public with proactive adoption and spay/neuter initiatives, made available to every segment of the population.  Pre-Katrina, operating out of three local participating veterinarian offices, the organization was responsible for adopting approximately 250 animals annually as well as sterilizing 1500 - 2000 animals each year.  The ultimate goal of SpayMart was to open the city’s first low cost, high volume spay/neuter clinic.  Everything was progressing according to schedule, until Katrina

With the clinic 75-80% complete, the storm totally destroyed the roof and all the contents inside the building.  Circumstances beyond anyone’s control forced SpayMart to redirect its energy and focus on the more pressing needs of the animals, rescuing and reuniting pets with owners, or in many circumstances, finding new homes for those whose owners never returned.

The organization participated heavily in water rescue in the weeks following Katrina, and transported over 175 animals to its shelter in rural Mississippi, in an effort to remove them from harms way.  Every effort was made to reunite the pets with their owners but many remain homeless today.

The SpayMart shelter is located on 27 beautiful acres and can house comfortably 250 to 300 cats.  At present, the facility is at maximum capacity, due not only to Katrina rescues but also cats involved in a cruelty case.

The Sad Truth

Thousands of cats and dogs will end up in Louisiana's animal shelters this year. Sadly, more than 80% will be destroyed because there aren't enough homes to go around. Dogs and cats are given the death penalty for a crime they didn't commit—being born.Pet owners can save themselves and other taxpayers the millions of dollars spent each year in animal sheltering and control programs by getting their animals sterilized. It costs approximately $120 to capture, house, kill and dispose of an animal compared to an average of $75 to spay or neuter that animal. This is the ONLY humane solution and SpayMart is committed to:

  • Addressing the issue of pet overpopulation by education and aggressive adoption and spay/neuter assistance programs

  • Reducing the number of euthanized animals

  • Aiding indigent pet owners when funds are available

Please spay or neuter your companion animal
