Jimmy, Male
I started my life as a feral cat living in uptown New Orleans. Food was scarce so my family moved around quite a bit in search of whatever we could find. Someone must have noticed how pretty my eyes were, because they bated traps and I was so young and so hungry I went right in. I lived in a nice lady’s back yard for many years before the storm. She didn’t try to take me and just let me be. Had it not been for the storm, I would have probably died a feral cat. But all that changed. I went to the SpayMart shelter in rural Mississippi but really missed my other life. I avoided human contact and stayed away from the other cats. Months passed and I started to feel funny. No matter how much I ate, I continued to lose weight. Then one night, I could no longer stand. A SpayMart volunteer spotted me behind a piece of cat furniture and approached me. I was too weak to run. She gently placed me in a large cage and gave me some fluids under the skin and force fed me. No one thought I would make it through the night. I just remember someone holding my head up, feeding me every two or three hours. In the morning I was carried to a vet who confirmed my liver wasn’t working properly. I required force feeding six to seven times a day. Gradually I no longer feared the gentle hand that cared for me. I am currently on medication because both my thyroid glands have been removed.
