Who is the Feline Alliance?

Feline Alliance is an ad hoc group of nine animal welfare agencies in the New Orleans metro region. Our agencies, composed of rescues, shelters, animal controls and advocacy groups, have set the ambitious goal of providing 2,000 low cost spay and neuter surgeries to stray and feral cats during the month of October as part of the Neuter Scooter campaign. This is our first step in a combined effort to fight the cause of pet overpopulation at its roots: on the street, where thousands of kittens are born each year, only to be euthanized for lack of good homes.

Traditionally, the public has perceived only a single solution to feral and stray cats: turn them into shelters. Sadly, shelters are not the place for feral cats, who cannot be adopted into homes, and who also compete for space with socialized, friendly pets that get turned in every day. The end result is the tragic euthanasia (putting to sleep) of healthy animals who could have lived quality lives outdoors. A second, humane solution exists, in the form of Trap Neuter Return, or TNR. TNR, which Feline Alliance promotes, is a humane method of population control, which allows the public to trap, sterilize, vaccinate and return feral cats to their neighborhood to live out the rest of their lives. TNR has been proven to reduce overpopulation, improve cat health, eliminate problem behaviors such as fighting, spraying and howling, and still provides communities such as ours with the rodent and snake control that healthy cat colonies provide. Most importantly, it curbs the tide of animals entering area shelters, where many, lacking space, are euthanized.Ending animal overpopulation begins with you. If you have feral and stray cats in your neighborhood, and want to make a choice that will improve the quality of life for people and cats alike, then call today to schedule a Neuter Scooter appointment, or attend one of the many events that will provide you information about low cost spay/neuter services available EVERY DAY in our community.

10 clinics, 30 days, $10 surgeries…Help us end feline overpopulation, one cat at a time. Feline Alliance is composed of member agencies: Animal Rescue New Orleans, Friends of the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter, Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter, Jefferson SPCA, Louisiana SPCA, Plaquemines Animal Welfare Society, Plaquemines Cat Action Team, Plaquemines Parish Animal Control, and SpayMart.
